Walk around your house first. Measure the roof and other areas you want to decorate. Find all the outlets and note how far they are from where you want to put the lights. Check for tree branches, downspouts or other things that could make it hard to put up the lights. If you don’t do this you might end up with strands that’re too short or cords that are visible.
Be careful with electricity when decorating for the holidays. Each outdoor circuit has a limit on how power it can handle and holiday lights can use a lot of power. Adding one strand to an outlet that is already full might work for a while but it could also cause problems. Add up the power of all the lights you plan to use on each circuit before you buy them and leave some room.
If you’re going on the roof bring someone with you. Have them hold the ladder for you. It’s not safe to climb on the roof especially on cold mornings when the shingles are slippery.
Use clips instead of nails and staples. Gutter clips and shingle clips are cheap easy to use. Won’t damage your house.
Consider using LED lights if you haven’t already. They use energy run cooler and last longer than old-fashioned bulbs. Choose one color. Use it everywhere. Mixing colors can look bad.
Get a timer for your outlets. Programming it once is better than turning the lights on and off every night for weeks.
Plan everything, on the ground. Climb the ladder once. It will be a lot easier that way.
